Summer is truly upon us. I can tell, because the last thing most of you are thinking about is taking a woodworking class! I can hardly blame people for going golfing, fishing and to the cottage though - part of living in Canada is getting outside and enjoying the nice weather while we’ve got it. |

That having been said, I am going to remind everyone of an outstanding opportunity to spend two weeks working on a project of your choice with Garrett Hack, one of the most respected furniture makers of our day. We still have space available in the 11 day Design and Build with Garrett Hack class starting on the 4th of August, 2008. As I mentioned in our last newsletter, those participating will have an opportunity to consult with Garrett about their project via email before the class actually begins, so they can arrive with some solid ideas how they will proceed when the class starts. Treat yourself to an incredible opportunity, and call and register today! (and if that doesn’t sound like enough of a sales pitch, keep in mind that the shop is air conditioned!)
Our Craftsmanship series of classes also run throughout the summer, so give some thought to taking advantage of the smaller than ever class sizes. And for those hot and muggy summer days, did I mention that our shop is air conditioned? |

During Garrett’s last demilune class, our resident craftsmen Vic Tesolin and Nick Moore worked along with the class to build their own variations of a demilune table. Nick’s features some impressive string inlay in a traditional federal period style, while Vic’s more contemporary take on the form in mahogany featured silver and bloodwood stringing.
Vic has finished and submitted a couple of articles now for Canadian Woodworking magazine. Watch for his byline in the August and October issues. He has started work on a commission for a set of drawers, as well as working on the design of a bench for use in a gallery or other public area. |

I have been remiss in not giving credit to Vic for many of the photos that appear both in our newsletter and on our website. Thanks Vic! |

Nick Moore’s first go at building a Windsor style settee in cherry and ebonized ash is completed and awaits delivery. He incorporated some nice inlay details into an eye catching piece. Nicely done Nick. |

Nine month student Denis Legault completed his maple night stand and delivered it to an eager audience at home before we even had a chance to photograph it! He met the challenges of hand cutting curved moldings with a beading tool, dealing with curly figured maple and fitting a smooth operating suspended drawer with great care, resulting a piece he can be proud of. He has now leapt into his next project, a craftsman inspired bookcase in cherry. Keep up the good work Denis. |

Congratulations to Cirvan Hamilton, who completed our 12 week program in March. The chair Cirvan built as his final project won the Ontario Crafts Council Design Award at the Muskoka Arts and Crafts show this spring. Keep an eye out for Cirvan’s work – I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of it! |

Many students attending Rosewood are introduced to the use of a mortiser for the first time, and are always impressed with the speed, accuracy and utility of this machine. They are not cheap though, so last year we designed a mortiser that could be built in a woodshop that would provide the operating qualities of a commercial machine costing many times more. Last August, five mortisers were taken home by the attendees of our first Make Your Own Mortiser workshop. We are repeating this class again this summer, running August 18 to the 24th. Not only will participants go home with a useful machine, they will also have picked up lots of tips and techniques for efficiently producing multiple components quickly, accurately and efficiently. |

It seems like a long way off right now, but we have started to post our 2009 course calendar. Please keep an eye on the website, as we will continue to post additions as we get confirmations from guest instructors.
Here’s wishing each of you a safe, happy and healthy summer, wherever your travels may take you.
Cheers,
Ron Barter
